Our very first January Term course in Yiddish and Jewish Culture was a huge success! The brainchild of faculty members Justin Cammy of Smith College and Rachel Rubinstein of Hampshire College, the program also included Yiddish instruction by Dovid Braun, lectures on klezmer and Yiddish theatre music by Hankus Netsky, and work with the book collection under the supervision of Catherine Madsen and Aaron Rubinstein.

The students were hard-working, enthusiastic and full of camaraderie as they gained not only language skills but cultural awareness, covering such topics as the origins of Yiddish, historical attitudes towards Yiddish, and the contemporary Yiddish scene. Physical contact with our book collection made the Book Center's work especially real and brought the group into contact with Yiddish culture in a way that will always stay with them. It was a mekhaye to have the building bustling with students in the middle of January, and we can’t wait ‘til next year, when we look forward to running this terrific program again.
